Morgagni Hernia: Robotic Repair by a Minimally Invasive Surgery Expert
A Morgagni hernia is a rare type of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) that occurs through an opening in the front part of the diaphragm. Though often discovered in infancy or childhood, some cases remain undiagnosed until adulthood. At Dr. Jihad Kudsi’s advanced surgical practice, we provide robotic minimally invasive repair for Morgagni hernias with a focus on faster recovery and long-term relief.
What Is a Morgagni Hernia?
A Morgagni hernia is a defect in the foramen of Morgagni, a small space near the front of the diaphragm. This opening allows abdominal organs—such as the colon, small intestine, or omentum—to move into the chest cavity. Unlike the more common Bochdalek hernia (which occurs in the back of the diaphragm), Morgagni hernias are anterior and right-sided.
While congenital in origin, some Morgagni hernias are diagnosed later in life, especially in patients presenting with vague gastrointestinal or respiratory symptoms.
Symptoms of Morgagni Hernia
Many adults with Morgagni hernias are asymptomatic. However, when symptoms do occur, they may include:
- Abdominal pain or discomfort
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Bloating and early satiety
- Recurrent chest infections
- Bowel obstruction (in advanced cases)
If a Morgagni hernia becomes incarcerated or strangulated, it may cause severe, life-threatening symptoms that require emergency surgical intervention.
Diagnosing Morgagni Hernia
Dr. Kudsi uses a combination of imaging studies and clinical evaluation to accurately diagnose Morgagni hernias:
- Chest X-ray– may show bowel loops in the thoracic cavity
- CT scan of the chest and abdomen– provides a detailed view of hernia contents and diaphragm defect
- Upper GI series or contrast studies– used in select cases to assess organ positioning
Timely diagnosis is important to avoid complications and guide surgical planning.
Robotic Surgery for Morgagni Hernia Repair
Dr. Jihad Kudsi is a leader in robotic hernia repair and minimally invasive foregut surgery. Using the da Vinci® robotic system, he performs precise dissection and closure of the diaphragmatic defect with significantly reduced trauma compared to open surgery.
Benefits of Robotic Morgagni Hernia Repair:
✅ Smaller incisions and less postoperative pain
✅ Faster return to daily activities
✅ Lower risk of complications
✅ Minimal scarring
✅ Durable mesh reinforcement, when needed
In most cases, the hernia contents are reduced into the abdominal cavity, and the defect is closed primarily or reinforced with surgical mesh for long-term strength.
