Achalasia: Robotic Surgery & Comprehensive Care
Achalasia is a rare esophageal disorder that makes it difficult to swallow food and liquids. It occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) fails to relax, and the esophagus loses its natural peristaltic movement. Left untreated, it can cause significant discomfort, weight loss, and complications over time.
At Dr. Kudsi’s practice, we offer state-of-the-art robotic surgical repair of achalasia using minimally invasive techniques that provide excellent long-term outcomes with faster recovery.
What Is Achalasia?
Achalasia is a chronic motility disorder of the esophagus. It prevents the esophagus from moving food into the stomach effectively, primarily due to two issues:
- The muscles of the esophagus fail to contract and push food down.
- The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) fails to relax properly.
This condition may lead to esophageal dilation, food regurgitation, chest discomfort, and nutritional issues if not addressed.
Common Symptoms of Achalasia
If you're experiencing any of the following symptoms, you may have achalasia:
- Difficulty swallowing (both solids and liquids)
- Regurgitation of undigested food
- Chest pain or pressure after eating
- Heartburn or acid reflux-like symptoms
- Unintended weight loss
- Nighttime coughing or choking
Symptoms often mimic other gastrointestinal disorders like GERD, so accurate diagnosis is essential.
How We Diagnose Achalasia
Dr. Kudsi and his team use a comprehensive diagnostic approach, including:
- High-resolution esophageal manometry (gold standard)
- Upper endoscopy (EGD) to rule out blockages or inflammation
- Barium swallow studies to visualize esophageal emptying
Robotic Surgery for Achalasia Repair
Dr. Jihad Kudsi specializes in robotic Heller myotomy, a highly precise, minimally invasive surgical procedure to treat achalasia. Using the da Vinci® robotic system, this technique offers:
✅ Smaller incisions
✅ Less postoperative pain
✅ Shorter hospital stay
✅ Faster return to normal activity
✅ Lower complication rates
During a robotic Heller myotomy, Dr. Kudsi cuts the tight LES muscle fibers to allow food and liquids to pass into the stomach. In many cases, a partial fundoplication is added to prevent reflux.
